Hi. My name’s Denise, and I’m a fourth-year honors student at The Ohio State University with a major in journalism and a minor in media production and analysis. I am profoundly interested in the capabilities and limitations of language, and reading and writing have been two of my favorite hobbies since childhood. Writing is one of my main creative outlets; it’s my passion and my form of artistic expression. Although journalistic writing is not as flexible as poetry, per say, it still fascinates me and allows my curious nature to thrive.
I’m attracted to the journalistic profession because it offers a multitude of fields to work in, and journalists can choose to cover nearly any subject matter. In April of 2014, I was lucky enough to secure a communication internship position at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, and the experience has showed me what a career in strategic communication could be like.
Although it’s probably not the path I’d like to take, it has fostered my interest in science writing, and my love for animals makes up for the lack of journalism in the job, especially since I still get to write articles. My responsibilities additionally include updating and managing content on vet.osu.edu, promoting info via social media, writing a monthly alumni e-newsletter, distributing news releases, interviewing faculty, staff and technicians and assisting with photo shoots or media visits.
As any college student, I am not sure where I will end up in the career world, but I know I want to create information that means something to me – no matter the size of the audience. My interests include any form of art (including web design), the effect of humans on the environment and biodiversity and medical research. Who knows where I will end up in the future, but I will continue exploring my passions and improving my journalistic skills.
P.S. check out my articles that have been published in OSU’s student newspaper, The Lantern, here.
